The Virginia Law Foundation announces our 2024 grant recipients and awards $714,199.77 to 35 organizations across the state. Carefully reviewed and selected by the VLF’s Grants Committee, these annual grants support a variety of law-related projects that will benefit thousands of Virginians.
“Equal access to justice lies at the heart of the Virginia Law Foundation’s mission,” shares David Gogal, chair of the VLF’s Grants Committee. “The three prongs of our mission aim to promote pro bono and affordable legal services, the Rule of Law, which ensures that all are equal before the law, and the advancement of law-related education to teach our rights and responsibilities as Virginia citizens. It is through this mission and our philanthropy that we strive to preserve access to justice and the Rule of Law for generations to come.”
Since the establishment of our grants program in 1984, the VLF has awarded more than $29.4 million in grants to dozens of initiatives and nonprofits across Virginia that align with its mission. In the last decade, the VLF has funded signature grants, which include the Nuremberg Trials Courtroom exhibit at the Virginia Holocaust Museum and the Supreme Court of Virginia’s Judicial Learning Center. This year’s grant recipients include a range of projects that provide essential legal aid, public service internships for law students, civic education programs for all ages, and other critical causes and programs.
“We are blessed as a Commonwealth to have so many worthy organizations working tirelessly to close the justice gap, promote a better understanding of the Rule of Law, and enhance the effort to promote and provide meaningful legal education,” states Ray White, executive director of the Virginia Law Foundation. “As an organization, we are fortunate to have such supporters who stand with us as we collectively provide the most significant funding we can for so many of these organizations. We are eternally proud of what we do for the betterment of all Virginians, and we hope you’re proud, as well.”
In 2024, the VLF is celebrating our 50th anniversary and marks this year with the theme, “Justice Resounding,” underscoring our commitment to a state where every person has access to justice. The justice gap—the disparity between the legal needs of low-income Virginians and the resources available to meet those needs—remains a significant issue. Our grants program is crucial in addressing this challenge and amplifies the organization’s dedication to Virginians in all corners of the state.
“For forty years, and through a highly competitive grant-making process, the VLF has been funding dedicated and inspiring non-profits who bring a shared mission to life. We are excited to support the 2024 grant recipients and believe they will provide transformational and impactful services for thousands of Virginians,” states Gogal.
To honor and award this year’s grants, the Virginia Law Foundation will host our Grants Luncheon on August 22 at the Virginia Holocaust Museum in Richmond.
